Memorial Orations

The Society offers twelve Memorial Oration Awards to Eminent Scientists across the Nation.

1. PROF. SUBODH CHANDRA MAHALANOBIS MEMORIAL ORATION

Prof. Subodh Chandra Mahalanobis initiated the studies of Physiology as a basic science under Faculty of Science in the University of Calcutta in the year 1901. At present Physiology is taught at Undergraduate and Postgraduate level not only in Calcutta University but also in many other Universities all over West Bengal and also in Tripura. To perpetuate the memory of Late Prof. Mahalanobis, the Physiological Society of India instituted, the oration. The first oration lecture was delivered by his direct student Prof. B.B. Sarkar in 1971.

2. PROF. BIJALI BEHARI SARKAR MEMORIAL ORATION

Prof. Bijali Behari Sarkar was the Professor and Head, Department of Physiology, Calcutta University. He was a great Physiologist and a pioneer researcher and scientist in India especially in cardiovascular and respiratory physiology. Prof. Sarkar contributed immensely towards the development of the Department of Physiology, Calcutta University and also towards the promotion of Physiology in the country. To perpetuate his memory, the Physiological Society of India instituted the Memorial Oration in the year 1989. The first oration lecture was delivered by Prof. A. K. Maity in 1989.

3. PROF. PARIMAL BIKASH SEN MEMORIAL ORATION

Prof. Parimal Bikash Sen succeeded Prof. B.B. Sarkar as Head, Department of Physiology, Calcutta University. He contributed in the field of Biochemistry. To perpetuate his memory, the Physiological Society of India instituted the Memorial Oration in the year 1989. The first oration lecture was delivered by Dr. H. K. Jana in 1989.

4. PROF. S.R. MAITRA MEMORIAL ORATION

Prof. S.R. Maitra, Professor and Head, Department of Physiology, Calcutta University, was the pioneer in developing Work and Exercise Physiology researches in the country. To perpetuate his memory, his relatives initiated the memorial oration in the year 1989. The first oration lecture was delivered by Dr. S. R. Mukherjee in 1989.

5. DR. J.N. MOITRA MEMORIAL ORATION

Dr. J.N. Moitra was a Physiologist and an eminent scientist. To commemorate his memory, his wife made an endowment for the oration lecture to be delivered every year by a reputed scientist at the Physiology Section of the Indian Science Congress. The first oration lecture was delivered by Prof. S. R. Maitra in 1985.

6. PROF. A.K. MUKHERJEE MEMORIAL ORATION

Prof. Achintya Kumar Mukherjee was the Professor and Head, Department of Physiology, Presidency College and also Principal, Presidency College, Calcutta. To commemorate his memory, his wife Smt. Pratima Mukherjee made an endowment towards the oration lecture to be delivered by a Physiologist every year. The first oration lecture was delivered by Dr. H. P. Chattopadhyay in 1992.

7. SRI RAMENDRA SUNDAR SINHA MEMORIAL ORATION

Sri Ramendra Sundar Sinha was the eldest brother of Dr. Ramananda Sinha. Dr. Ramananda Sinha is an eminent Physiologist and Scientist in the field of Respiratory Physiology. Dr. Sinha made an endowment for the oration lecture every year to be delivered by a reputed scientist. The first oration lecture was delivered by Prof. R. K. Poddar in 1993.

8. SMT. SUBHA MUKHERJEE MEMORIAL ORATION

Smt. Subha Mukherjee was the youngest sister of Prof. Santosh Dev Mukherjee, Ex- Professor and Head, Department of Ear, Nose and Throat. National Medical College, Calcutta. Smt. Subha Mukherjee passed away, at an early age of 28 years, of breast cancer. To commemorate her memory, Prof. S.D. Mukherjee and Dr. (Mrs.) Chitralekha Mukherjee instituted the oration lecture. The first oration lecture was delivered by Dr. Saroj Gupta in 1993.

9. SMT. SHAKUNTALA DASGUPTA ORATION

Smt. Shakuntala Das Gupta was an eminent Physiologist. She was an Ex-Reader and the Head of the Department of Physiology of Calcutta University. Her specialization was in the field of ‘Nutrition and Dietetics’. She was engaged in active research for a long time in the Department of Physiology, Calcutta University and guided a number of Ph.D. students. She herself instituted the oration. The first oration lecture was delivered by Prof. K. N. Haldar in 1997.

10. DR. CHITRALEKHA MUKHERJEE MEMORIAL ORATION

Dr. Chitralekha Mukherjee was an eminent Physiologist and researcher. She was engaged in active researches in the Department of Physiology, C.U., for a long time. Her specialization was in the fields of Endocrinology, Pharmacology etc. Her daughter, also a Physiologist, instituted the oration in memory of her mother after her mother’s sudden demise. The first Memorial Oration Lecture was delivered at Tripura University, Agartala, Tripura in 2008.

11. DR. SIDDHARTHA DEBNATH MEMORIAL ORATION (Scientist within the age of 45 years)
